Yes you can have a long finger nail to play the guitar, normally when playing the guitar assuming you are they type that plays with the right hand, this is usually the hand for finger picking as well as for strumming the guitar. This particular process does not really need a longer nail thus you can decide to grow the nails in your right hand

But for the left hand which is use for note making as well for pushing the strings you can’t have a long nails in this hand because it will be a big problem when working with the strings hence the right hand is more feasible for growing nail if you intend playing a guitar with it.

Thus for you to play effective well you need to either trim off the nail or cut it to some what moderate size such that it will not disturb while you are playing, also you might not be happy having a nail break as a result of the strings getting between the nails hence you have to choose one either you go for the long nails and stop playing guitar or you choose to play and forget the nails.

This also goes for people playing or strumming with the left hand thus you can have longer nails in your left but not the right one just the same reason given above. But this is cool because most people especially the male tend to grow nail on the left hand and plays the guitar so well with it.
