Is there a link between hypothyroidism and fingernail problems?
Yes there is a link between hypothyroidism and finger nail. Hypothyroidism on it own is a fungal infection that makes the nail thin as well making them brittle. But most people do not take it as a fungal infection, yet for me anything that has negative impact on your nail making it not to grow the normal way is thus an infection and that is exactly what hypothyroidism does.

Not only does it affect your nail it also affects every other part of your body thereby slows the rate of growth of the body system, this include acid being produces in the stomach, as well as causes under production of hormone in the pancreas, dunder production of this vital hormone leads to insufficient digestion of nutrient this in turn affects nail growth.

For treatment you have to see a doctor or a dermatologist for proper examination, most often samples of the nails should be sent to the lab (mycology) to confirm if it is hypothyroidism , if the culture turns positive then treatment should commence immidately and it does take sometime for it to be cures.

Digestive enzyme supplement is another good product available out there that you can buy and use for this condition, it aid fast digestion and another product is the hydrochloride supplements this helps in improving the stomach acid. Also there are lots of anti fungal cream sold in the market that you can use on the finger nail.

A good home remedy for hypothyroidism and fingernailproblems is the use of tea tree oil though it is effective but it does take longer time to see positive result.

Point of note when hypothyroidism and fingernail problems is not treated on time this can lead to an abnormal growth of the nail.
